Evidenced-Based Medicine for the Evaluation and Management of the Lumbar Spine

Course Description

Low back pain is one of the biggest challenges facing our society and physical therapists specifically are being challenged to provide evidence and direction for the care of the lumbar spine. This course will review critical thinking in relation to the current literature The participant will be able to perform a specific evaluation and determine a course of therapy based on the current evidence. The primary focus will be an EBM approach including: a review of evidence based medicine ; how to incorporate key EBM components into daily practice through asking focused clinical questions; performing literature searches efficiently; critically interpreting the data; and integrating the research into making decisions through a clinical reasoning approach. This basic course will be lab intensive with a hands on learning approach as well as case study examples to integrate and emphasize a clinical focus. 7.5 contact hours

Learning Objectives

Following the conclusion of this course the participants will be able to:

1. Explain the evidence for the etiology of symptoms at the lumbar spine.

2. Explain the evidence for specific evaluation of the lumbar spine including diagnostic classifications

3. Explain the evidence for physical therapy management of lumbar spine

Evidenced-Based Medicine for the Evaluation and Management of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome.

Course Description

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) accounts for 25% of all knee injuries treated in a sports medicine clinic. PFPS has been described as one of the most vexing clinical challenges in rehabilitative medicine. This course will focus on an evidence based medicine (EBM) approach to: the etiology of patellofemoral pain; the pathomechanics causing PFPS; evaluation with an emphasis on the functional kinetic chain influence on PFPS; as well as the physical therapy management of PFPS.

1. Explain the evidence for the etiology of symptoms at the patellofemoral joint.

2. Explain the evidence for specific evaluation of the patellofemoral joint, including a functional biomechanical screen.

3. Explain the evidence for physical therapy management of patellofemoral pain syndrome

Evidenced-Based Medicine for the Evaluation and Management of the Cervical Spine

Course Description

Cervical spine pain including Whiplash Associated Disorder, radiculopathy and cervicogenic headaches are a common problem seen by physical therapists This course will review critical thinking in relation to the current literature The participant will be able to perform a specific evaluation and determine a course of therapy based on the current evidence.

1. Explain the evidence for the etiology of symptoms at the cervical spine.
2. Explain the evidence for specific evaluation of the cervical spine including diagnostic classifications
3. Explain the evidence for physical therapy management of cervical spine including manipulation and exercise
